Hike to the Fanes mountain huts

The hike takes us from the Pederü mountain inn up to the Fanes and Lavarella mountain huts, surrounded by magical landscapes in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park

The Fanes highland at 2,000 m a.s.l., already thousands of years ago fascinated the people and inspired them to magical stories. They are the scenes of the Sagas of the Dolomites, collected by Karl Felix Wolff. From San Vigilio di Marebbe the shuttle bus brings us to the Pederü mountain inn. Here our hike starts. The first section leads us round the halved crater of scree, afterwards we walk through a valley floor full of mountain pines. On the eastern side we see the green Lake Piciodel and soon we reach the meadows at the Munt de Pices Fanes mountain hut.

Lightly uphill we hike further towards the Lavarella mountain hut. The gurgling Rio di San Vigilio turns into a small lake, now we have reached the head of the valley and the Lavarella mountain hut. On the right the so-called "Parliament of the Marmots" expands, piled up rock layers, which form a giant natural arena.

From the Lavarella mountain hut we hike towards the Fanes mountain hut. Arrived there, we decide to carry on up to Passo Limo, where the green gleaming Lake Limo waits for us. Those who still want to carry on hiking, can either climb the peak of Mt Col Becei or hike further to the Gran Fanes mountain hut via the Limo mountain pass. We decide to take a short rest and start our way back to Pederü along the same route.
