Sillian

The main village of the Alta Pusteria is a true paradise for active holidaymakers and nature lovers

Altitude: 1,103 metres a.s.l.

The municipality of Sillian at the foot of Mt Thurntaler is composed of the hamlets of Arnbach, Sillian and Sillianberg and has more than 2,000 inhabitants. It is one of the largest villages of the Alta Val Pusteria in East Tyrol and home to several important people like scientist Ignaz Paprion and Josef Schraffl, the first president of Tyrol and Adam Purwalder a famous author.

We recommend walking along the Karnischer Höhenweg, a wonderful high-altitude path. Cyclists can try the 200-km long Drau cycle route leading to Marburg in Slovenia. In winter the skiing area of Sillian with its more than 45 km of ski slopes attracts numerous skiers of all levels. The ski club "Bobo" and the ski school are perfectly suitable for children taking their first steps on skis.

Culture lovers should visit the only well-preserved mediaeval pillory and the Baroque parish church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary dating back to 1431. Here, you can also attend several religious celebrations, including the Sacred Heart festival in June when the bonfires illuminate the mountains and the night sky.

At the Hochpustertaler Bauernladen in the centre of Sillian you can choose from a wide range of souvenirs and local products to take home.
