Ausservillgraten

Ausservillgraten in the charming Villgratental, a side valley of the Alta Pusteria, is embedded among verdant mountain pastures

Altitude: 1,286 metres a.s.l.

The municipality of Ausservillgraten with its four hamlets Unterwalden, Unterfelden, Versellerberg and Winkeltal lies in the Villgratental, a side valley of the Alta Pusteria. Until 1960, before the construction of a modern road network, the locality was isolated from the other parts of the valley. Ausservillgraten has preserved its traditions and uniqueness to this day thanks to several cultural events where ancient customs are celebrated. The impressive secular farms are one of the highlights of the village which received an official award for its devotion to environmental protection and local culture.

Ausservillgraten is a paradise for active holidaymakers. The Winkeltal-Volkzein hiking area and Mount Thurntaler are among the most well-known hiking destinations of this area and the award-winning "Thurntaler Rundwanderweg" is one of the most beautiful alpine hiking routes of Tyrol. Other leisure activities include fishing, cycling and paragliding. In winter skiers and snowboarders will enjoy the ski slopes of Mt Thurntaler which are easily accessible both from Ausservillgraten and Sillian. At the ski club children can take their first steps on skis.

We highly recommend a visit to the St. Geltrude of Nivelles parish church. Other interesting attractions are the Genoveva chapel in the proximity of the Bachlehen farm, as well as the art gallery by Hanns Bachlechner and the Wurzermühle mill at the eponymous farm. End your day on a high note by playing skittles at the same farm.
