Lienz Dolomites

The western part of the Gailtal Alps is called Lienz Dolomites, even though they don’t consist of dolomite rock

The Lienz Dolomites, as it might appear to be obvious, are not part of the Dolomites, but only bear the name of the World Heritage site stretching in its west. Also from a geological point of view the two mountain ranges differ, as the Lienz Dolomites don't consist of dolomite rock. However, their rock formations and natural appearance resemble the "Pale Mountains".

The Dolomites of Lienz stretch over a length of 40 km in East Tyrol, from the Kartitsch Saddle to Mt Gailberg. The mountain range is located in the south of Lienz, the city is located at its foot. The Lienz Dolomites are the western part of the Gailtal Alps and belong to the so-called Drauzug (Drava range), also including the Northern Karawanks.

The highest elevation of the Lienz Dolomites is Mt Grosse Sandspitze with 2,770 m. Further famous peaks are Mt Spitzkofel (2,717 m), Mt Kreuzkofel (2,694 m), Mt Hochstadel (2,680 m) and Mt Böses Weibele (2,521 m).

Highest peak: Mt Grosse Sandspitze (2,770 m a.s.l.)
Territory: East Tyrol
