Three Peaks Nature Park

The nature park includes famous mountain peaks surrounding Dobbiaco, San Candido and Sesto in the Sesto Dolomites

The Three Peaks Nature Park includes an area of 11,635 hectares, extends in the north east of the Dolomites and includes the localities of Dobbiaco, Sesto and San Candido. The most famous peaks rising in his protected area are the Cima Undici (3,092 m), the Cima Dodici (3,094 m), the Monte Paterno (2,744 m) and of course the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (2,999 m), symbol of the Alta Pusteria and rock formation of worldwide fame. The Sesto Dolomites, characterising the nature park by their bizarre rock formations, are part of the Natural World Heritage site of the Dolomites.

About two thirds of this area are made up of rocks and detrital. That is exactly the reason why in this area mainly plants which prefer this pioneer vegetation grow, such as ground laurels, yarrows or bell-flowers. One of the most typical birds living in this nature park is the eagle, but also singing birds such as the white-winged snowfinch or the Alpine accentor have their habitat in this park. However, there is only one lake of considerable size in the park, which is the Landro Lake.

In February 2010 the Sesto Dolomites Nature Park has been officially renamed and changed into Three Peaks Nature Park. This renomination has been authorised due to the fact that the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, or Three Peaks of Lavaredo, are the most striking landmark of the park and are a natural sight that is known worldwide.
