Haus Wassermann

The old building Haus Wassermann in Villabassa hosts a tourism museum and a unique remembrance cards collection.

In the 15th century, Haus Wassermann in the village of Villabassa was the residence of the noble family of Kurz before it came into the possession of the Wassermann family, who opened a café and restaurant in it. At the same time the Wassermann family collected many folkloristic items, which today are exhibited in the tourism museum.

The tourism museum tells about the history and development of tourism in the Upper Val Pusteria. Also the construction of the railway line, which made the valley more accessible for modern tourism, is illustrated in the museum. A separate room is dedicated to early alpinism in the region. On the second floor visitors can get an insight into the tourism in the time period around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, and the working conditions of employees.

A very special exhibition of the museum hosts about 18,000 remembrance cards, which Emma and Theres Wassermann collected during their lifetime. The so-called “Wassermann Collection”, the biggest collection of remembrance cards in South Tyrol, can also be accessed at the digital info point in the museum.
